Joyce, why are you a volunteer, as you don’t get paid?’
English translation of Joyce’s words:
Good evening, my name is Joyce. I am a volunteer at the animal shelter ARK where we look after over 300 animals. Also I’m a volunteer for the association Doris. Many times people ask me why I am a volunteer, because volunteering means working without being paid, you don’t get a salary. I would like to explain to you that volunteering brings you beautiful things. For me personally it has brought me things that I did not expect.
Firstly, I found my family here, Marina, the president of our association, who is like a mother, a sister and a friend to me. I found the animals who have become my family. I found many very good friends here, beautiful families who I love and they love me. I got to know this beautiful Island. I got to know Ioannis with his big heart, who is a volunteer at our shelter as well as for the bears. His volunteering brought us all here together because he wrote a beautiful book about the bears. Ioannis taught me Greek which I’m very grateful for. And I met Mrs. Europe of Likeio Ellinidon who organized for me free of charge Greek dance lessons. This all has brought me a lot of Joy.
Secondly, the work that we do. It is not always nice what we see. We see animals in terrible circumstances, a lot of animal cruelty. But volunteering gives you the opportunity to help, to do something, to give them the love that they so need, to treat them. And after that, you see that the animals get better. And the best part is when they start trusting you, the love that you give they return.
No salary in the world can buy this. We also find very good homes. Here on the island, in Greece and abroad. This is important. However, if we don’t find a home for the animal, the shelter is a very good shelter. It is no problem if they don’t find a home, because they’re happy in the shelter. I’ve been to several other shelters in the Netherlands and in Spain. And of course good work is being done, but often the shelters are not good and consist of all cement. The animals are not happy. ARK means a natural environment, this is very important. It is dirt with gravel, there are trees with shade, they have houses, they have friends, they run, play, dig, smell. They’re having a good time.
Also the association has given me a lot, and this is one of the other reasons that I’ve stayed for 9 years. The association works very well. All the members genuinely love the animals, they all protect them, feed them on the street, it is a group of people who works very well together which is very important.
And that’s what I would like to say, personally volunteering has brought me a lot. Unfortunately there are not many volunteers here in Greece. I would like to tell you to become all volunteers, because it brings so many things that you don’t expect. I haven’t lost anything, I only won. Thank you very much.
